Blend two screen colors

Mixing colors is useful when you need a hover state between two tokens, a midpoint for a gradient, a transitional chart color or a quick exploration of how two brand colors relate. This color mixer blends two selected colors by interpolating their red, green and blue channels. Move the ratio slider toward Color B to increase its contribution, then copy the result as HEX, RGB or HSL for CSS, documentation or design tokens.

RGB mixing describes how screens combine light. That makes it perfect for web work, but it is not the same as mixing paints or inks. A midpoint between blue and yellow on a screen will not behave like the same mixture in physical pigment. For interface design, however, RGB mixing is practical because the browser ultimately renders colors as screen values. The preview updates instantly so you can judge the result before copying it.

Using ratios in interface design

The ratio controls the balance between the two inputs. At 0 percent, the result is Color A. At 100 percent, it is Color B. Values around 10 to 25 percent are often useful for subtle hover states or tinted surfaces because the original color remains dominant. Values near 50 percent are better for transitional palettes, gradient midpoints and chart ramps. If the result looks dull, try increasing the saturation later in HSL or choose source colors with more separation.

Copying reliable color tokens

Once you find a useful mixture, copy the format that best matches your workflow. HEX is compact for design handoff, RGB is helpful when you need channel values or alpha overlays, and HSL is easier to adjust by hue, saturation or lightness after mixing. Because the tool runs locally, you can safely experiment with unpublished brand palettes or client colors. Always test the final mixed color in context, especially when it will be used behind text or next to important status colors.

How to use

  1. Pick two colorsChoose the start and end colors you want to blend.
  2. Set the ratioMove the slider to control how much of the second color is included.
  3. Copy the resultUse HEX, RGB or HSL output in CSS and design tokens.

Frequently asked questions

How are the colors mixed?
The tool mixes the two selected colors by interpolating their RGB channels at the chosen ratio.
Can I copy the result as HEX?
Yes. Copy the mixed color as HEX, RGB or HSL from the output cards.
Is RGB mixing the same as paint mixing?
No. RGB is additive screen-color mixing, so it behaves differently from physical pigments.
Does the mixer use a server?
No. All color math runs in your browser and copying uses navigator.clipboard.
